Autumn in the Bois de Vincennes (in the suburbs of Paris) signed M Porte and dated 1944. This large wooded area is and has been a popular destination, close to the city for Parisians for many years. and it is painted in the autumn of 1944, shortly after the liberation of Paris from Nazi occupation.
 
The painting is a view across the lake from the shady bank, in the early autumn when the leaves on the trees are just beginning to change, creating a soft, peaceful atmosphere. 
 
During World War Two,  art supplies were difficult to source, so many paintings of this era were on board.
