A wonderful religious icon, a high quality and well cast depiction of The Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus with the original convex glass and  Napoleon III ebonised wood oval frame.
 
It is exceptionally well detailed from the clasped hands in the foreground to the flowers at the side.
 
The meerschaum has been expertly cleaned, removing none of the charm and resealed at the back in the traditional style. There are a few minor marks on the glass. There is also a split in the frame, this in not uncommon for wooden frames of this age, it is now held firmly, the minor restoration having preserved this heirloom piece from the second half of the 1800s for many generations to come.
