A collectible cartonnage book dating from 1855, entitled Emile Defaix, the protagonist in this country tale. 
 
The mid green cover is embossed with rose and St Jaques shell intricate detailing, emblematic of the Second Empire, when this book was printed.
 
The book is over 170 years old and there is some wear to the corners, especially at the spine, foxing, especially to the frontspiece and although still bound together some looseness of the pages, most noticeable at the end, pictured. 
 
The book is 7.5" by 4.5"
