This would have been used for making the 'crottin' style cheeses, usually with goats milk. The fresh cheese would have been put into the former which would be clipped shut to squeeze and mould the individual cheeses, there's a little gap for any whey to run out. The matured cheese would take on the distinctive shape of the carved indentations.
There are so many uses for this beautiful hand crafted object, it could be used open as storage for, for example, eggs and could be used for French style home cheese making.
The mould measures 23cm 9" long, 14cm 5.5" wide and 6cm 2.25" tall.
